Established in 1979, Ian Mosey are one of the longest running bed and breakfast pig businesses in the UK. We work with over 300 independent farmers based in the North of England and the Scottish borders to contract finish pigs for the UK pork industry.
Working closely with all our stakeholders we endeavour to finish excellent quality pigs whilst meeting high animal welfare standards and pig production practices. Ian Mosey have a history of building long-term relationships with their farming partners creating a mutually beneficial, sustainable relationship. There are many benefits to keeping Ian Mosey bed and breakfast pigs which is why many of our farming partners have been with us for over two generations
Contract pig finishing can help to secure a consistent cashflow throughout the year. It can fit around your core business, utilising buildings which usually sit empty at certain times of year.
B&B pigs are an excellent addition to a mixed farming enterprise. The additional revenue stream can serve as a way to diversify with minimal risk to your business.
Pig manure is rich in phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen so you can benefit from significant savings in fertiliser costs whilst improving soil health to improve crop yields.
We have full control of our feed supply chain enabling us to react quickly to support our farm partners. Some farmers choose to sell their grain to us to save haulage charges as our transport fleet is on-site delivering feed.
We have a dedicated compliance team to support our bed & breakfast pig farmers. This ensures that our pigs and farms meet standards set by Red Tractor, RSPCA Assured and other compliance schemes.
We work with vets and employ a team of experienced fieldsmen to work alongside you. This ensures that specialist knowledge in health, welfare, nutrition, housing and husbandry is at your disposal.
Becoming a B&B pig farmer is a straightforward process for new contract rearers and finishers enabling swift entry into the scheme. The bed and breakfast pig scheme attracts farms of all shapes and sizes and in recent years Ian Mosey have been placing pigs in a variety of buildings including former cattle, dairy and poultry buildings, general purpose buildings as well as new and old custom built pig buildings.
How does the B&B Pig scheme work?
The model is simple - Ian Mosey supplies the pigs, feed and vet and fieldsmen support, while the farm supplies the buildings, straw, water and day to day labour and husbandry. The Ian Mosey pig finishing operation is an integrated supply chain where feed is supplied by our own feed mill and wagons, and our modern transport fleet deliver and collect pigs within the B&B farm base.
This tried and tested infrastructure and wealth of expertise within the business ensures excellent support to our farming partners and a practical and dynamic approach to managing the supply chain.
Why choose Ian Mosey?
As a family run business, we have been trading since 1979 and have successfully weathered all levels of volatility in the sector. Our model is based on building long lasting relationships with our bed and breakfast farming partners many of whom have been keeping pigs for Ian Mosey over 2 generations.
We pride ourselves in paying on time and providing excellent and abundant support, in doing so we hope to build and maintain excellent relationships with our B&B farm base.
Our various teams within the business work together to ensure that our B&B farm base have what they need when they need it, whether it be our team of fieldsmen providing practical support, our the compliance team providing support in relation to farm assurance standards.
Additionally, our dedicated feed mill business and transport division means we have full control of our supply chain enabling us to react quickly and deliver great service and support to the farms that we work with.
Above all we are an agri-business with our own farms so we think practically and pragmatically and unlike many of our competitors we are a family run business. We know that flexibility is important to farmers in uncertain times. We know our farming partners appreciate the fact that we speak their language.
