This is potentially a whole new revenue stream for your farm. If your farm relies on income at peak times of the farming year, becoming a B&B pig farmer can help ensure a consistent cashflow throughout the year. It can fit around your core business e.g. utilising buildings which usually sit empty at certain times of year.
The additional revenue stream can serve as a way to spread risk for your business.
Pig manure is rich in Phosphorus, Potassium and Nitrogen and therefore you can benefit from significant savings in fertiliser costs whilst improving soil health and therefore improvements in crop yields.
By incorporating bed & breakfast pigs into your existing farm business you should improve productivity, hopefully making use of existing labour and assets thereby achieving a better return overall.
Ian Mosey have a specialist team dedicated to supporting our B&B farmers with all elements of compliance and quality assurance. This ensures that our farm base meet standards set by Red Tractor, RSPCA Assured and various other compliance schemes.
We work with a team of vets and employ a team of skilled and experienced fieldstaff who work with our B&B farming partners to ensure specialist knowledge in health, welfare, nutrition, housing and husbandry is at your disposal.
Established in 1979, Ian Mosey are one of the longest running bed and breakfast pig businesses in the UK. We work with over 300 independent farmers based in the North of England and the Scottish borders to contract finish pigs for the UK pork industry. Working closely with all our stakeholders we endeavour to finish excellent quality pigs whilst meeting high animal welfare standards and pig production practices. Ian Mosey have a history of building long-term relationships with their farming partners creating a mutually beneficial, sustainable relationship. Some of the benefits that these contract farmers are able to take advantage of are; flexible arrangements, farm diversification, higher asset utilisation, additional fertiliser source as well as an additional, reliable income stream. In addition to these benefits some farmers choose to sell their grain to Ian Mosey to save haulage charges as the Ian Mosey transport fleet are already on-site delivering feed.
Ian Mosey is actively growing to meet the demands of processors and retailers across the UK and as such are looking for more farmers to undertake pig finishing agreements. The Ian Mosey Bed and Breakfast pig model makes becoming a B&B pig farmer a straightforward process for new contract rearers and finishers enabling swift entry into the scheme. The Bed and Breakfast pig scheme attracts farms of all shapes and sizes and in recent years Ian Mosey have been placing pigs in a variety of buildings including former cattle, dairy and poultry buildings, general purpose buildings as well as new and old custom built pig buildings. With a wealth of experience within the company we are able to best advise how to set up your farm to take B&B pigs.
The model is simple. Ian Mosey supplies the pigs, feed and vet and fieldstaff support, while the B&B Farm supplies the buildings, straw, water and day to day labour and husbandry. Ian Mosey’s pig finishing operation is an integrated supply chain where feed is supplied by Ian Mosey’s feed mill and Ian Mosey’s transport fleet deliver and collect pigs within the B&B farm base. Our tried and tested infrastructure and wealth of expertise within the business ensures excellent support to our B&B farming partners and a practical and dynamic approach to managing the supply chain.
As a family run business, we have been trading since 1979 and have successfully weathered all levels of volatility in the sector. Our model is based on building long lasting relationships with our bed and breakfast farming partners many of whom have been keeping pigs for Ian Mosey over 2 generations. We pride ourselves in paying on time and providing excellent and abundant support, in doing so we hope to build and maintain excellent relationships with our B&B farm base. Our various teams within the business work together to ensure that our B&B Farm base have what they need when they need it, whether it be our team of fieldsmen providing practical support, our compliance team providing support in relation to farm assurance standards. In addition to this, our dedicated feed mill business and transport division means we have full control of our supply chain enabling us to react quickly and deliver great service and support to the farms that we work with.
Above all we are an agri-business with our own farms so we think practically and pragmatically and unlike many of our competitors we are a family run business. We know that flexibility is important to farmers in uncertain times. We know our farming partners appreciate the fact that we speak their language.
